Bangkok Remand Prison
The Bangkok Remand Prison is located in the Klong Prem prison complex in northern Bangkok, not far from Kasetsart University in Bangkok and The Mall Ngamwongwan in Nonthaburi. Bangkok Remand Prison is one of the most widely-known prisons since it has housed famous people from Thai politicians to international prisoners fighting extradition, such as Viktor Bout, who was incarcerated at the Bangkok Remand Prison from 2008 – 2010, until he was transferred to Bang Kwang Central Prison briefly.
The Bangkok Remand Prison has thousands of inmates, both Thai and foreign. The Bangkok Remand Prison is for prisoners who have cases in the Court of First Instance, but this prison also has prisoners whose cases have already had judgment in the first court and are awaiting the process for the Court of Appeals or the Supreme Court. Some prisoners will get transferred to the Klong Prem Central Prison, around 500 meters away from Bangkok Remand Prison. This will depend on the sentence received in the Court of First Instance, as well as other administrative reasons from the prison commander and the relevant officials at the Department of Corrections. It should be noted that prisoners at the Bangkok Remand Prison do not have a drug charge, since almost all drug-related prisoners will be detained at the Bam Bat Prison (officially known as the Central Correctional Institute for Drug Addicts).
Visitation is permitted for lawyers, consular officials, and some family and friends depending on current regulations at the prison. It is best to check with Thailand Bail for current information on visitation at the Bangkok Remand Prison, since we are there almost every week visiting inmates, submitting documents, or having meetings with prison officials.
