Thai Drug Police and New Rewards from ONCB
A recent change in the way that Thai drug police get rewarded for their work will be realised at the end of May 2020, according to the Office of the Narcotics Control Board (ONCB). These changes will provide more reward money to Thai police officers who are working on drug cases. These new changes will be enacted on 31 Thailand Bail’s lawyers and case specialists visit prisoners in the Bang Kwang Prison and have first-hand information about what life is like inside the Bangkok Hilton 2020. The new rewards structure could potentially mean significant pay-outs for drug cases in Thailand. We have detailed the updates below, based on the % reward and what needs to be done for the police to collect said reward.
Based on the known details from the ONCB, there will be new rewards categories for drug suppression and narcotics investigation teams throughout Thailand. They are as follows:
- Reward for Thai police if the drugs are seized but no suspects are caught = 25% of the value of the seized narcotics.
- Reward for Thai police if the drugs are seized and suspects are caught = 50% of the value of the seized narcotics.
- Reward for Thai police if the drugs are seized, suspects are caught and the boss or manufacturer of the narcotics is caught = 75% of the value of the seized narcotics.
- Reward if the case has juvenile suspects involved = the same % listed above + an additional 5,000 THB for each case.
With rewards of 25% – 75% of the value of the drugs, it is easy to see that this can produce substantial rewards for the anti-narcotics police in Thailand. With small drug busts involving small amounts of drugs, the reward could be just a few thousand baht. if a defendant with a major drug case is housed in the Bam Bat, with major anti-drug operations in Bangkok, usually, Pattaya, Chiang Rai, and elsewhere, the rewards can easily amount to millions of baht for the police team.
